Rayne Mikaelson was born into a family that understood the price of public service. Her father, Thor, was a respected American diplomat and former senator from California, a man whose political career introduced his family to the complicated intersection of power, influence, and national security. Her mother, Veronica, was a fiercely intelligent woman who valued family above reputation. Though she grew up with considerable privilege that she recognized quickly had gotten her through doors she thought she too was working hard to get through, she was never particularly interested in the polished world her father inhabited.She preferred understanding people to impressing them, and she learned early that the most dangerous individuals were rarely the ones who made the most noise. Her relationship with her mother became strained as she grew older. Learning about her estranged sister as her Mother's meddling in her Father's affairs outside of their home in Southern California prompted her to detach completely from her parents, instead turning to a way out by the time she was out of high school.By the time she was 14, Rayne got in contact with her Godfather who once served alongside her grandfather. The training was unofficial and deliberately kept away from public attention for fear that the press would find out about her intensive private instruction that prepared her to follow in her familial footsteps.Five years passed as she learned surveillance, defensive tactics, weapons handling, interrogation awareness and the discipline required to operate under pressure. Her mentor was demanding, teaching her that surviving a dangerous situation often depended less on strength than on recognizing it before anyone else did.By twenty-five, she had developed skills and instincts necessary to work in the shadows. Due to her Father's background which she had no choice but to use to further herself in the field. She entered the intelligence world through unofficial channels, eventually becoming involved in sensitive operations that required discretion, extremely unconventional thinking and the ability to function without recognition which lead her to fall into recruitment with the group known as KorTac. Her assignments with them took her across Europe, Asia, South America and China; into environments where loyalties could potentially shift overnight. She learned to assume nothing, trust selectively and never mistake an official briefing for the entire truth.Years later whilst living in Istanbul, after finding out about her estranged sister and two nieces which she assumed were children, she immediately went back to the United States to meet them and offer her own support. Since then, she is looking for them, hoping she can make amends for the time and connection that had been lost.
